Tokyo Tokyo!!

by Min

This is going to be a short post as I have to leave home to catch a 6am flight. (Now it’s 2am and just finished packing…)

Yes, I’m going to Tokyo! I’ve been to Tokyo many times, but this time, I’m going there with my boyfriend as a celebration of both my birthday (Nov 26) and his birthday (Dec 1). After so many thoughts on where to go, (our candidate places were Turkey, Capri, Santorini, Hallstatt & Vienna and Tokyo. Finally, we decided to go to Japan.

I have my elder sister living in Tokyo and a close friend, so for me, it’s great to play with my little nephew who started to say a couple of words recently and I can’t wait to meet my friend there as well. For my boyfriend, he’s got a potential business partner(??) who will take us to all those hot spots/ must-go places in Tokyo this time.

We booked a package at ZUJI Singapore “the b Ochanomizu” because it’s near to my sister’s place and the location is actually quite convenient. I will write a review about this hotel once I return and of course, nice places to go in Tokyo as well.

It’s a free wifi in the hotel, so hopefully I have time to write some posts while in Japan, and hopefully I’m not too tired after all the walking. (Japan is too expensive to take a taxi like I do in Singapore.)

Still haven’t decided where to go or what to do on my birthday (I’m turning 30 in a couple of days!!! OMG!), but I’m thinking of going to Tokyo Tower… It’s been a while that I went to Tokyo tower last time and it will be special to go there with my boyfriend.

So so, please check out my blog in a couple of days later and I’ll keep you posted on my Tokyo trip!

Skunk Works

by Min

Stealth Fighters

Have you every wondered how ‘stealth’ thing works? Now, we take it for granted for having stealth bomber, stealth fighters, and vessels… but do you know how it works and how it started? Still, not many countries (U.S is pretty much the only one in the world) developed this technology. China has recently tested its first stealth fighter (prototype).

Stealth technology means, in short, it’s making the object to be less visible or ideally invisible under radar, sonar, or infrared and other detecting method.

Skunk Works

I kept asking questions to a friend who used to work in Lockheed Martin and he recommended this book, called ‘Skunk Works’.

For those who are interested in military stuff or fighters, this is a MUST read!

Skunk Works is about the background of the development of the first stealth fighter, F-117 (Night Hawk), and the behind story of it. It’s really fascinating and simply ‘COOL STUFF’ Period.

After I read this book, whenever people say about weird looking objects in the air, or UFO, I don’t usually believe it. I think.. ‘woo.. maybe somebody is testing a new secret project! ;) ’ Let’s say.. if anybody saw the prototype of F-117 back in 1981, I’m sure they thought that it would be UFO or something.

Book Description from Amazon

From the development of the U-2 to the Stealth fighter, the never-before-told story behind America’s high-stakes quest to dominate the skies Skunk Works is the true story of America’s most secret and successful aerospace operation. As recounted by Ben Rich, the operation’s brilliant boss for nearly two decades, the chronicle of Lockheed’s legendary Skunk Works is a drama of cold war confrontations and Gulf War air combat, of extraordinary feats of engineering and human achievement against fantastic odds. Here are up-close portraits of the maverick band of scientists and engineers who made the Skunk Works so renowned. Filled with telling personal anecdotes and high adventure, with narratives from the CIA and from Air Force pilots who flew the many classified, risky missions, this book is a riveting portrait of the most spectacular aviation triumphs of the twentieth century.

Flower / Home Gardening – Dahlia and Vinca

by Min

Gardening? Me? No Way!

I’m a girl who was really far far away from gardening. I hate insects, worms, lizards, spiders, pretty much anything in nature.

After I learned flower arrangement early this year, my interest in plants and gardening has grown. I tried a couple of plants in Seoul and in Singapore, as you guessed, every single time I tried, I killed them all.

Unlike myself, my boyfriend has quite some experience in home gardening in Australia, and one day, we were at ‘Home Fix’ and decided to utilize the backdoor area in his apartment by growing herbs and flowers.

Giving a Try…

So, we bought Vinca, Dahlia, Thyme, and Chilli seeds (which seems easy to grow as per instruction) and got some gardening stuff from Daiso. Then, we, sort of, forgot about it or we were procrastinating.

Finally,

2 days ago, we planted Dahlia and Vinca. As you can see, my boyfriend did most of the work while I was just being an assistant and a photographer at the same time.

(J drilling the wall.)

(Hanging Baskets on the wall.)

This time, we didn’t have enough soil so ended up planting only Dahlia and Vinca. This is Dahlia seeds. I thought of the last time that I planted something was when I was in elementary school. Since then, NONE! It was my first time to see Dahlia seeds.

(Dahlia seeds)

(J in Action!)

This is the final product! Dahlia on the left basket.

And Vinca on the right basket.

Here is my handsome gardener after his hard work.

Fingers Crossed!

It’s my responsibility to water them regularly and to take care of them. I’m not so confident how well they will grow, but I’ll try my best this time. I’ll give you updates on my gardening progress! Fingers crossed!

Everyday Korean – How to say “I’m sorry” in Korean

by Min

미안해요 – Me Ahn He Yo

In this episode, we will learn how to say “I’m sorry.” in Korean.

We say, 미안해요 (Me Ahn He Yo).

For your friends or people younger than you, you say 미안해 (Me Ahn He)  without “yo” in the end.

The formal way to say it is 죄송합니다 (Jwe Song Ham Ni Da).

In a situation when you made a mistake at work, or when you should say I’m sorry to people older than you or people you don’t know well, you should say 죄송합니다 (Jwe Song Ham Ni Da), not 미안해요 (Me Ahn He Yo).

Summary:

미안해요 (Me Ahn He Yo) – In general

미안해 (Me Ahn He) – To your friends or people younger than you

죄송합니다 (Jwe Song Ham Ni Da) – Formal way, to people older than you

Check out this video!

There’s a Korean song called 미안해요 by Gummy, featuring by handsome T.O.P from Big Bang (K-Pop). You may check out the music video and listen to how to pronounce 미안해요 (Me Ahn He Yo).

Please leave a comment if you have any questions. 감사합니다.

2. What I Wish I Knew When I Was 20 by Tina Seelig

Yes, the title of this book is quite cliche…I thought so,too.

The translated version of this book was a best-seller in Korea. This book was everywhere in major bookstores and I thought I would just give it a try. It was early January this year when I read this book and at that time, I was all about “starting my own business”. I had a business idea, pretty much a conventional one with high fixed cost. This book made me realize what I needed in business and also in life in general. I always thought I lacked creativity while I was working in Microsoft Operations and I regarded innovation is something that only Steve Jobs can achieve.

But, with a refreshing perspective and realistic tips in this book, I learned that those are not far from me. The author, Tina Seelig, is the executive director of the Stanford Technology Ventures Program, guides people to challenge the assumptions, to defy the expectations. And she provides many interesting examples and inspiring advice.

After reading this book, I was excited about my possibilities as an entrepreneur.

And…I was very glad that I read this book when I was still 29. :)

Finding Myself – 3 Books that helped me… (Part 1)

by Min

George Bernard Shaw said “Life isn’t about finding yourself but Life is about Creating yourself…”

I found this quote totally randomly the other day, how I wish I knew this quote earlier. Truly, I spent so much time in an attempt to find myself or discover my talent so that I can find my ‘perfect’ job. But not until recently, I realized that life is not about finding what I’m born with, but about making things happen that I want and creating myself that I want to be.

People who have known me would affirm this that I’ve read a fair number of books in personal development or Self-help whether in Korean or in English. Among all those books that I’ve read so far, here is 3 books that I found helpful in the journey of finding myself.

1. The Enneagram: Understanding Yourself and the Others In Your Life

I’ve got to know about Enneagram from my Korean ex-boss who was visiting Singapore. We were catching up over dinner and he told me about Enneagram and now he’s become a certified Enneagram trainer. Enneagram is somewhat like personality test, categorizing people in 9 different types. (Type 1: The Perfectionist; Type 2: The Giver; Type 3: The Performer; Type 4 : The Tragic Romantic; Type 5: The Observer; Type 6:  The Loyal Skeptic; Type 7: The Epicure; Type 8: The Protector, Type 9: The Mediator), but it gave me a profound impact on how to understand other people, and further more, how to interact and communicate with them.

What I liked about…

It’s a great introductory book to Enneagram. First, I thought Enneagram is just about personality categorizing, but…unlike other personality test, Enneagram approach is more dynamic. One person shows different sides when he/she is at peace or stressed, or other situations. This approach does not fix someone’s personality in one category but explains how it moves to different categories depends on certain situation. I liked the way Enneagram explains ‘what motivates people’ and ‘what are core fears” for each type. After I read this book, I tend to guess which type the person would be whenever I meet new people.

I’m typical Type 3: The Performer…

I’m Type 3 : The Performer and my boyfriend is Type 5: The Observer. Finding about myself through Enneagram gave me some kind of peace in my mind. Type 3 is motivated by vanity or image (e.g. the image that people have about you) and Type 3s are very goal/task-oriented and recognition-seeking people. Deep down, I’ve felt guilty about myself, being image-conscious, recognition-seeking, but now I’ve accepted who I am and stopped feeling guilty about it. I’m Type 3 and all other Type 3s out there are like me, too.  Not only that, knowing each type, I’ve had a better understanding of why people say certain things and act certain ways. Of course, it helped my relationship and communication with my boyfriend as well. (I believe Type 3 and Type 5 cannot easily get along well.)

Buy the book:

Amazon: The Enneagram: Understanding Yourself and the Others In Your Life

Take the online Free Sample Test and find out what type you are!

The author’s website has a great deal of information. Please check out: http://www.enneagram.com.
Maybe you can watch this video for an overview of Enneargram.

It would be fun to get to know other people’s type. Let me know by leaving a comment! :)

Everyday Korean – How to say Good Bye

by Min

안녕히 가세요 – Ahn Nyeong Hee Ga Se Yo

안녕히 계세요 – Ahn Nyeong Hee Gyea Se Yo

In this episode, we will learn how to say good-bye in Korean.

In Korean,  depending whether you’re leaving or you’re staying, we say good-bye as per below:

안녕히 가세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Ga Se Yo)

is used to people who are leaving while you’re staying.

안녕히 계세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Gyea Se Yo)

is used to people who are staying while you’re leaving.

Somebody asked me what if you both are leaving at a party, how do you say good-bye? We say, 안녕히 가세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Ga Se Yo) to each other. I say 안녕히 가세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Ga Se Yo) and the other party also says to me 안녕히 가세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Ga Se Yo).

It seems it’s easier to think that based on whether the person you’re talking to is leaving or staying, you say 안녕히 가세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Ga Se Yo) or 안녕히 계세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Gyea Se Yo). The person who you’re talking to is leaving : 안녕히 가세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Ga Se Yo). The person who you’re talking to is staying: 안녕히 계세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Gyea Se Yo)

안녕(Ahn Nyeong)

For your friends or people younger than you, you can say 안녕 (Ahn Nyeong) as Good Bye as well as Good morning, Good afternoon and Good evening. So easy!

Summary

The person who you’re talking to is leaving : 안녕히 가세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Ga Se Yo)

The person who you’re talking to is staying: 안녕히 계세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Gyea Se Yo)

Friends or people younger than you: 안녕 (Ahn Nyeong)

Tae Yang (T. Park) 태양 – Korean Celebrity Hair Designer – Part 1

by Min

Finding a perfect Hair Designer…

As a woman, I know how difficult it is to find a great hair stylist who understands your style, your taste, and your mood at a glimpse without much telling him/her in detail… and how frustrating it is when the result turns out to be not quite what you wanted, costing you a fortune… yes… i know.. I’ve been there, done that. So far, I have not found any hair designer that I like in Singapore, it may be due to the language or a different style…  so whenever I go back to Korea, the first thing I do is to go to a hair Salon.

Yes, after many years of searching….Finally, I found ‘THE ONE’ !!
His name is Tae Yang, and he’s a celebrity hair designer in Korea.
I was watching a Cable TV makeover show, ‘Fashion of Cry Season 2′  in Korea one night, and a new hairstyle that this lady was transformed to… was something exactly what I wanted. Tae Yang was in the show, explaining what he did to her hair. I knew that moment that I needed to make an appointment with him.

Before & After shot from Fashion of Cry Season 2 (source: Here)

Briefly his profile is…

He worked at Gavert Atelier in Beverly Hills and he did Reese Witherspoon, Liv Taylor, and many Hollywood celebrities and models, etc. He came back to Korea and his clientele is mostly Korean actresses and models, recently, Kim Hyesoo, Han Hyoju, and Kim Sarang, etc. Here is the link to his blog.

Of course, I was worried. He’s a celebrity hair designer who regularly shows up on TV and I heard from friends that perm in Cheongdam hair salons can easily cost up to USD 500. But I really wanted to try, maybe as ‘once in my life time experience’, to let the Celebrity hair stylist do my hair.

At that time, I had a long straight hair, dyed in dark brown which i thought it would make my face brighter.

I searched the web to find him and he was working at Jenny House in Apgujeong. I made an appointment with him.

My First Visit

It was a bit weird that the person that I saw on TV is doing my hair, but he was nice and friendly and I told him my requirements.

- Easy to manage: sometimes  i don’t even bother blow-drying my hair. I’m clumsy in styling my hair.
- Voluminous on top of my hair : my naturally straight hair drags down the whole hair.
- Long lasting style : I won’t be able to come back to hair salon for almost 6 months.

First, he asked what kind of style i want and i told him about the hairstyle in the TV show. He agreed that it would look good on me, however, he suggested to cut my hair shorter like shoulder length and suggested to change the color to more to reddish brown as my hair color made my face look more yellow than my skin color. He recommended me to try Rose Brown. I was afraid to try an adventure to cut short despite he’s a famous one… so I decided to perm and color change as the style I wanted from TV show.
And He did the MAGIC! and here was the final product…

I would not write this post and recommend Tae Yang if the hair style just turned out what I wanted.
The pleasure of finding THE ONE came later.

What I loved about…

With my new hair, some of my friends commented, “Your face look fairer, did you change your foundation?” “Did you lose your weight? Your face looks smaller.” Just a hair style change could do this.

Another reason is…. I’m sure girls with naturally straight hair know, after 1-2 months when you did a perm, newly grown hair on the top of your hair is hanging flat while the rest of your hair is very wavy. After a while, it looks quite funny that 1/3 of your hair is flat while the rest is wavy. This was why I always did a ‘Volume perm’ for my top part. But still after some time, it still looks flat. You may not believe it, but I think Tae Yang’s cut solved this. After 2 months, it became more voluminous wavy on top. I was pleasantly surprised as it never happened with any of other hair stylists. I thought the money was well spent and I got to understand the true value of Tae Yang’s cut. I didn’t have to blow dry heavily on top of my hair to get more volume any more. So easy to manage and so voluminous as what I wanted :)

In Part 2, I will write about my new short hair!

Pepero Day – 빼빼로 데이

by Min

Today is Pepero Day in Korea.

Pepero Day (빼빼로 데이) is on November 11th each year, and in Korea, people celebrate this date by giving Pepero to their loved ones. Pepero is the cookie stick looks like this (pretty much the same as Japanese one, Pocky), with chocolate dip. The date, 11-11, resembles Pepero sticks.

Pepero Day is very popular among students, couples, teenagers, etc. and it’s as big as Valentines Day. Some people criticize that it’s another commercialized day, but personally, I enjoyed exchanging Peperos with my friends when I was in school.

Picture is from: Here

Some girls make Pepero by themselves (hand-made Pepero), such as my sister, but I don’t have this kind of talent, so I’ll just buy one Pepero for my boyfriend later today.

Handmade Pepero Pictures

It seems that Nov 11th is Single’s day in Chinese culture, and it’s quite interesting how people think differently on the same day.

In Korea, there are several more days people celebrate, e.g. White Day (March 14th), or Black Day (April 14th), and I’ll write about it next time.

Happy Pepero Day!

Korean Movie – Joint Security Area (JSA) 공동경비구역

by Min

This is my all-time favorite Korean movie. Based on the novel, DMZ, it was released in 2000 and directed by Park Chan Wook. JSA has been one of the biggest hits in Korean movie history and  got awarded in many international film festivals. I watched this movie again a couple of months ago, but it is still good even after 10 years!

In 2009, Quentin Tarantino named this movie as one of his twenty favorite films since 1992.

What I liked about:

Technically, South Korea is still at war with North Korea now. Unlike many other films depicting North Korea as the enemy, this movie mainly shows about humanism as ‘Korean people’. It was a very fresh perspective to show North/South Korea relationship in this way. The movie is focusing the friendship between North and South Korean soldiers in JSA. Some of you may have watched ‘Shiri’, also themed about North-South Korea, but I prefer JSA.

After watching this movie, I really wanted to visit DMZ or Pan Mun Jum (판문점), but unfortunately, it is extremely difficult for South Korean citizens to visit DMZ as an individual. We have to go through security background check which takes more than a month and should get an approval from the Ministry of Unification. It’s open to foreigners except Chinese citizens, to visit and take a tour and feel the tension of two Koreas. I recommend many friends from overseas to take this DMZ tour and take as many photos as possible for me to see. I guess I get more curious about this kind of forbidden places.

I would not reveal any plot of this movie. A couple of things to know before the movie is that any communication between North and South Korean people is impossible. In regards to the unification of East and West Germany, I’m aware that communication like letters, telephones, etc were allowed between East and West. But in Korea, it is strictly prohibited and as you may know, North Korea is very isolated from South Korea as well as from the rest of the world.

Here is the trailer from YouTube and you can buy the DVD here: J.S.A. – Joint Security Area

Please leave a comment what you think about this movie if you already watched it!
