Everyday Korean – How to say Good Bye
안녕히 가세요 – Ahn Nyeong Hee Ga Se Yo
안녕히 계세요 – Ahn Nyeong Hee Gyea Se Yo
In this episode, we will learn how to say good-bye in Korean.
In Korean, depending whether you’re leaving or you’re staying, we say good-bye as per below:
안녕히 가세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Ga Se Yo)
is used to people who are leaving while you’re staying.
안녕히 계세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Gyea Se Yo)
is used to people who are staying while you’re leaving.
Somebody asked me what if you both are leaving at a party, how do you say good-bye? We say, 안녕히 가세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Ga Se Yo) to each other. I say 안녕히 가세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Ga Se Yo) and the other party also says to me 안녕히 가세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Ga Se Yo).
It seems it’s easier to think that based on whether the person you’re talking to is leaving or staying, you say 안녕히 가세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Ga Se Yo) or 안녕히 계세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Gyea Se Yo). The person who you’re talking to is leaving : 안녕히 가세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Ga Se Yo). The person who you’re talking to is staying: 안녕히 계세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Gyea Se Yo)
안녕(Ahn Nyeong)
For your friends or people younger than you, you can say 안녕 (Ahn Nyeong) as Good Bye as well as Good morning, Good afternoon and Good evening. So easy!
Summary
The person who you’re talking to is leaving : 안녕히 가세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Ga Se Yo)
The person who you’re talking to is staying: 안녕히 계세요 (Ahn Nyeong Hee Gyea Se Yo)
Friends or people younger than you: 안녕 (Ahn Nyeong)

안녕하세요! Thank you for coming to my blog. You’re visiting Korea next year? Wow! Just try to learn simple phrases first and say it many times. Practice makes it perfect! 감사합니다.
This site is actually helpful compared to other ones I’ve seen. I’m trying to learn Korean because of, well k-pop, been a fan of SHINee for years now. My friends and I also promised to go to Korea (mainly in Busan because my friend lives there) in year 12 after we graduate so I need to learn. Writing is the easy part, speaking and vocab is hard.
but this site has helped a lot. kamsamida
Hi Monica,
Thanks for visiting my blog. Glad that you find it helpful and at least you’re learning something. I like Shinee, too! I’ve been listening to ‘Dream Girl’ quite a lot recently. I admire that you guys are learning Korean to visit Korea. That’s amazing! I know writing / reading is easy part, but speaking and learning vocabulary is touch. Just try practicing phrases by phrases.
