Everyday Korean – How to say “Good Night” in Korean

by Min

안녕히 주무세요 Ahn Nyeong Hee Ju Mu Se Yo.

In this episode, we will learn how to say “Good Night” in Korean. We say,

안녕히 주무세요. Ahn Nyeong Hee Ju Mu Se Yo.

Let’s look at the literal translation.

안녕히 Ahn Nyeong Hee means ‘peacefully’…

주무세요 Ju Mu Se Yo means ‘to sleep’ and it’s a respectful form of verb ‘to sleep’.

Therefore, it means “Please sleep peacefully.”

Let’s practice! 안녕히 주무세요 Ahn Nyeong Hee Ju Mu Se Yo.

This is what I say to my parents at night or anyone older than you.

To your friends or people younger than you, you should say,

잘 자 (Jal Ja).

Literally it means, 잘 Jal means “well” and 자 Ja means to sleep. So it means “sleep well”.

For couples, it’s pretty common or popular to say “잘 자 내 꿈꿔” (Jal Ja Nae Kkum Kkwar). It means “Good night. Dream of me”. It started in a commercial  TV ad about 10 years ago and now it’s very common to say this to someone special.

Summary

안녕히 주무세요 Ahn Nyeong Hee Ju Mu Se Yo.

To friends and people younger than you

잘 자 Jal Ja

For couples,

잘 자 내 꿈꿔 Jal Ja Nae Kkum KKwar.

Happy Studying!
