  • Some vs. Somewhat vs. Somewhere

1) Some +  단수명사 : 형용사. “어떤”

Telecommuting is some form of computer communication.

Some + 복수명사 : 형용사. “약간의”

Technicians removed some papers from the safe.

Some : 대명사. “약간의 사람/것”

Some of the photons collided with the electrons.

2) Somewhat: 부사. “다소”

The President calmed down somewhat.

3) Somewhere: 부사, 명사. “어딘가”

We have to find a safe port somewhere between here and there.

 

  • Able vs. Enable

1) Able: 형용사, “be+able+to 부정사”

Few American painters were able to achieve the kind of abstract simplicity.

2) Enable: 동사. “enable + 목적어+ to 부정사”

Computers have enabled people to understand science better.

 

  • After vs. Afterwards

1) After : 전치사, 접속사 가능

After breakfast, Catherine insisted on my bringing a chair.

2) Afterwards: 부사, “그 후에”

I will take you on a vacation afterwards.

 

  • 부정표현 (No, Not, None, Never)

1) No: 한정사, 뒤에 무관사 명사 사용

You have no right to keep us here.

2) Not: 부사, 동사부정, 부사 부정, 부분 부정, 강조

Television was not invented by any one person. (부사, 동사부정)

Not surprisingly, a scientist in California invented the Richter scale used to measure earthquakes. (부사부정)

Not all the conclusions scientists make are accurate. (부분부정)

I remember not a single thing about him. (강조)

3) None: 대명사, 명사수식 못함.

I have thousands of memories but none of them are mine.

4) Never: 부사. 동사부정. “결코~ 않다”.

I have never seen a movie or a television show.

 

  • Farther vs. Further

1) Farther : 거리 (Physical distance)

She was afraid to go farther.

2) Further: 거리, 정도 (metaphorical, or figurative, distance)

L.A is further/farther north than San Diego. 거리. 둘다 사용가능

Humans further endanger the cougar. 정도로 사용.

  • Twice vs. Double

 

1)   Twice: 부사. “두 배”

He won a man who was twice his age.

2)   Double: 형용사->“두 배의”, 동사-> “두 배로 하다”

You had to charge for a double room. 두 배의, 형용사

They can’t just double the rent in this year. 두 배로 하다, 동사

 

  • Earliest vs. Soonest

 

1)   Earliest : “시기적으로 가장 빠른”의 의미, “가장 먼저”의 의미

Aborigines have settled in Australia from the earliest time.

I need the earliest records we do have.

The earliest I can have them ready is 4pm tomorrow.

I’d like to have an interview with you at your earliest convenience.

 

2)   Soonest: “곧, 빨리, 즉시”의 의미, “지금이라는 시점에서부터 가장 짧은 시간안에”의 의미

The doctor told me I’d get better soonest.

If I drop off my sweater this afternoon, what’s the soonest you can have it ready? (스웨터를 맡긴 시점부터 최대한 빠른)

Next Monday is the soonest we can deliver. (현재시점부터 봤을 때,)

 

  • Percent vs. Percentage

1)   Percent: 숫자뒤에 쓰이며 복수 불가

The crime rate in the United States rises four hundred percent.

2)   Percentage : 숫자 뒤에 사용불가. 백분율의 의미. 보통 형용사+percentage

The US is shouldering an enormous percentage of the financial burden.

 

  • Before vs. Ago

1)   Before: 과거와 비교된 과거 표현

I washed my face and hands before I came.

2)   Ago: 현재와 비교된 과거 표현

That meat was fresh two days ago.

 

  • Around vs. Round

1)   Around: 전치사. “둘레에, 사방에”

Satellites are placed in an orbital region around Earth.

2)   Round: 형용사 – “둥근 모양의”. 명사- (탄약의) 1발”

His round eyes grew rounder. 형용사로 사용

They fired hundreds of rounds of ammunition. 명사로 사용

 

  • Near vs. Nearly vs. Nearby

1)   Near: 전치사- “공간적으로” 근처에. 형용사-“시간적으로 가까운”

Annie is hitchhiking near a bridge. 공간적으로 근처에

David will visit L.A in the near future. 시간적으로 가까운.. 형용사로 사용

2)   Nearly: 부사 – 거의 = Almost

The Garden runs nearly half a mile straight across.

3)   Nearby: 부사 “가까이”. 형용사 – (공간적으로) 가까운”

She gets in bed and puts the candle nearby. 부사로 “가까이”

He took his shirt from a nearby tree branch.  형용사로 “가까운”
