Flower / Home Gardening – Hyacinth in Singapore

Flower / Home Gardening – Growing Hyacinth in Singapore

About a week ago, when Tiong Bahru Market was so busy and crowded with Chinese New Year preparation, I bought two pots of Hyacinth (one purple and one pink) at SGD 11 each. As Chinese New Year is the biggest time for flower shops in Singapore, it has all kinds of different flowers which you usually cannot find in any other time during the year.

I love Hyacinth fragrance. Although hyacinth is always expensive and quite difficult to arrange, I’ve wanted to grow hyacinth at home. But I didn’t know where to get them and I could not find them any other time in Singapore.

How to care Hyacinth in Singapore

As soon as I saw hyacinth in the market, I bought two pots. Since I do not have any knowledge how to care/grow hyacinth in Singapore (which temperature / humidity / sunlight are so different from Korea), I asked advice from the flower shop auntie. She told me to spray once a day and keep them indoors, not too much sunlight. This is because if water and sunlight are fully given, hyacinth will grow really fast. She meant ‘really fast’.

I didn’t realize “really fast” until recently how fast my hyacinth grows and blooms. It fully bloomed within one day!

After one week of 6 bulbs of hyacinth, now they are fully bloomed although I just sprayed them a little everyday and kept them indoors.

Pink Hyacinth! Lovely Color!

I’m going to try wiring with this hyacinth later!

It was a great joy to watch my hyacinths growing everyday and of course, the fragrance! Really enjoyed everyday and I hope they last long!!

Flower / Home Gardening – Dahlia and Vinca

by Min

Gardening? Me? No Way!

I’m a girl who was really far far away from gardening. I hate insects, worms, lizards, spiders, pretty much anything in nature.

After I learned flower arrangement early this year, my interest in plants and gardening has grown. I tried a couple of plants in Seoul and in Singapore, as you guessed, every single time I tried, I killed them all.

Unlike myself, my boyfriend has quite some experience in home gardening in Australia, and one day, we were at ‘Home Fix’ and decided to utilize the backdoor area in his apartment by growing herbs and flowers.

Giving a Try…

So, we bought Vinca, Dahlia, Thyme, and Chilli seeds (which seems easy to grow as per instruction) and got some gardening stuff from Daiso. Then, we, sort of, forgot about it or we were procrastinating.

Finally,

2 days ago, we planted Dahlia and Vinca. As you can see, my boyfriend did most of the work while I was just being an assistant and a photographer at the same time.

This time, we didn’t have enough soil so ended up planting only Dahlia and Vinca. This is Dahlia seeds. I thought of the last time that I planted something was when I was in elementary school. Since then, NONE! It was my first time to see Dahlia seeds.

This is the final product! Dahlia on the left basket.

And Vinca on the right basket.

Here is my handsome gardener after his hard work.

Fingers Crossed!

It’s my responsibility to water them regularly and to take care of them. I’m not so confident how well they will grow, but I’ll try my best this time. I’ll give you updates on my gardening progress! Fingers crossed!
